Dub Trio sprinkles reggae vibe with sonic metal flakes

Dub Trio IV (ROIR)
After two years touring behind Mike Patton’s Peeping Tom and Hassidic reggae artist Matisyahu, Dub Trio’s amassed personal musical energy needed to be released. Heavy is the optimal word. Album starter “En Passant” throws open the sonic metal floodgates, a torrent on gritty guitar lines, bass pyrotechnics and thunderous drums. And it doesn’t stop there. “Noise” fits said title, while buzzing surf riffs rip on “Swarm.”Testosterone release complete, the first dub interlude forms during “Control Issues Controlling Your Mind.” “Ends Justify The Means” furthers this with trippy effects and deep riddims. Dub or not, what shines on IV  is the trio’s songwriting ideal that metal and dub can collide, and work together in blistering harmony. Yeah, mon… Mash it up. —Glenn BurnSilver
